Auto Fare Hike In Mumbai & HC Verdict – Prof R R Pillai

Strange are the ways the judges deliver judgements. On the recent steep hike in auto fares as much as nearly  by 33% at one go on the one man Hakim Panel’s recommendations the HC on the one hand says that matters such as fare revision cannot be left entirely to  one retired civil servant, whether expert or not and on the other has allowed the steep hike to continue without  granting a stay on the hike. Again it has asked the State Government to set up a Committee involving experts in the field of finance, transport and auditing to examine if the fare hike is entirely correct. If the Court itself is doubting the correctness of the fare hike done on recommendation of one man Panel then the benefit of doubt should have been given to the millions of auto users, the hapless citizens in the face of hardship thrown at them by the mafia type auto unions and the callous political regime. If we have to wait for one month to get the correct picture why the Commuters should suffer the doubtful fair rise meanwhile. It would have been  a great justice done to the already harassed commuters of Mumbai had the Court stayed the unreasonable fare hike which in the court’s view too is less than correct, till such time the correct picture emerges.  High Court has failed to rise up to the occasion this time .
